As previously announced, HEDWIG will star Emmy Award winner and fave Tony Awards’ host Neil Patrick Harris as “Hedwig Robinson,” a German transgender woman and “internationally ignored song stylist,” who uses rock music to tell the tale of the botched operation that left her with that “angry inch.”
The show will be directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer, who won the Best Director Tony for Spring Awakening. Emmy Award nominee Spencer Liff of “So You Think You Can Dance?” will provide the musical’s movement/staging.
With text by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask, the Broadway production of HEDWIG will begin Previews on Saturday, March 29, 2014, with the official Opening Night scheduled for Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at the Belasco Theatre, located at 111 West 44th Street.
HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH began Off-Off-Broadway at the Westbeth in March 1997, then transferred to the Jane Street Theatre in February 1998 and ran for over two years. The show won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical with Obies going to both John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask in 2001. HEDWIG won a 1998 New York Magazine Award, Entertainment Weekly’s “Soundtrack of the Year” Award, and Time Magazine’s declaration that HEDWIG was the Top Musical of 1998.
The musical is being produced on Broadway by David Binder, who first produced HEDWIG in 1997, and Jayne Baron Sherman.
Tickets will be available on the website.
