Stage Entertainment USA and Sylvester Stallone have announced casting for the two leading roles in the upcoming Ahrens & Flaherty musical, ROCKY. Sparring on stage as the pugilistic title character is Andy Karl, who was a Drama Desk nominee for THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD revival and JERSEY BOYS. Newcomer Margo Seibert will make her Broadway debut as Rocky’s romantic interest, “Adrian.”
ROCKY is scheduled to begin Previews on February 11, 2014, with Opening Night officially set for March 13, 2014, at Broadway’s historic Winter Garden Theatre, located at 1634 Broadway Avenue.
The Tony award-winning writing duo of Ahrens & Flaherty are the musical masterminds behind this production, which premiered in Hamburg, Germany, in the Fall of 2012, where it is still entertaining packed houses at the Operettenhaus Theatre.
ROCKY tells the story of struggling small time Philly boxer, Rocky Balboa, who gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance to prove himself against heavyweight king Apollo Creed. ROCKY is a thrilling new musical that inspires viewers to follow their dreams.
From the press release:
### Produced on a shoestring budget, the original 1975 film, Rocky, was shot in 28 days, and starred its young and then-unknown screenwriter, Sylvester Stallone. Like the character of boxer Rocky Balboa, Stallone had to fight the studio, which wanted more bankable stars like Ryan O’Neal or Burt Reynolds, to be cast in the role. Stallone’s performance would earn him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and launch his career as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The small underdog film went on to become an American film classic, winning the 1976 Academy Award for Best Picture, and launching one of the most successful and iconic characters in Hollywood history.
### ANDY KARL can currently be seen in a return performance on Broadway as Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys, following his critically acclaimed performance as Neville Landless in the Broadway revival of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, for which he was nominated for a 2013 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical. A native of Baltimore, Andy’s parents enrolled him in an after school theatre program in high school to “keep him out of trouble” and what started as a way to channel his energy soon became a passion. After moving to New York a few years later, Karl quickly made an impression in the theatre community starring in Romeo and Bernadette, for which he received a Carbonell nomination, the Off Broadway production of Saturday Night working alongside Stephen Sondheim and Kathleen Marshall, and his stand out performance as Luke, the thuggish rapper in the original cast of Alter Boyz. Andy went on to star in numerous Broadway productions including 9 to 5, Legally Blonde (ACCA Award), and On the 20th Century, among many others. His film and TV roles include Joyful Noise; Rob Reiner’s And So It Goes (opposite Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton); Legally Blonde: The Search for Elle Woods; On the One; and New York, I Love You.
MARGO SEIBERT will make her Broadway debut as Adrian. She can be seen in the Off Broadway production of Tamar of the River at Prospect Theatre Co. this fall. Regionally she has performed in Candide at the Goodman Theatre/ Shakespeare Theatre Co.; In This House, Orestes: A Tragic Romp at Two River Theatre Co.; Arcadia at the Folger Theatre; The Boy Detective Fails at Signature Theatre; Next to Normal and Pregnancy Pact at the Weston Playhouse; as well as new work development at Playwrights Horizons, the O’Neill, New Dramatists and NAMT. She has appeared on television on “Boardwalk Empire.”
